TEMPORARY FOOD SERVICE GUIDELINES
Food prepared for special events in a private home, not approved by the City’s Permits, Planning & Zoning Department, may not be used or offered for human consumption in a food facility or outdoors, according to the Pennsylvania Food Code-Chapter 46 (§ 46.212). Food/beverages for sale or donation must be prepared from a licensed kitchen.
There are, however, exceptions to this ordinance which may include religious, non-profit and charitable groups, which are allowed to serve home-prepared foods.
The ordinance pertains to a food service establishment that operates for a period of not more than 14 consecutive days in conjunction with a single event or celebration. Fairs and festivals or similar celebrations, as well as dinners or other events sponsored by organizations, serving food and open to the public are all examples of temporary events.
The City of York asks citizens who are preparing food for special events to contact the Health & Sanitation Officer, as temporary operations often require that the food service is set up outdoors or in locations where keeping foods safe and sanitary is challenging.
