Shared commercial kitchen in York to receive $99K

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on July 15 will present the York County Economic Development Corp. a check for $99,000 to support creation of a shared kitchen incubator in downtown York.

YorKitchen is being developed by NutriCore NorthEast Inc., an initiative of the development agency. The commercial kitchen will be available for food producers to rent and will offer educational training on nutrition and workforce training.

The kitchen is expected to cost about $350,000, said Aeman Bashir, program manager for NutriCore. She said the kitchen should be operational by the end of the year and will have enough room to support two commercial vendors at one time. The kitchen will be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day year-round, she said. Rent will cost between $16 and $20 per hour, depending on the uses required, she said.

The check presentation will take place at 9 a.m. at Central Market in York. The money will make the YorKitchen project fully funded, Bashir said.

The project also is receiving funding as part of the market district revitalization project that is being supported by $4 million from the state — a grant that Gov. Ed Rendell announced in April in an effort to help York renovate Central Market and develop an arts facility downtown, Bashir said.
