York's Lincoln students learn business skills

Part of a summer program at the charter school focuses on entrepreneurship.

...jewelry boxes are destined to be sold, as part of the entrepreneur focus of the school's summer program. Anne Clark, community outreach specialist for Lincoln and Thackston charter schools, said the lessons will click once the kids are able to sell their creations.

Then, "it goes from a lesson in the classroom (to) reality," she said.

Lincoln's "Roar for Learning" summer program includes lessons in reading and math, time at the Hope Street Garden and physical activities. But the students also regularly receive lessons in entrepreneurship through the York County Economic Alliance and the Girl Scouts, Clark said.

The Economic Alliance is working with grades 3 to 5 once a week, teaching them business basics from customer service and budgeting to marketing, said Aeman Bashir, manager of new and small business development for the alliance.
